Did I break my kid's nose?!

I feel so bad right now! My 3 1/2 year old wanted me to throw him onto the couch like Daddy does. Well I did it a few times, we're both giggling, and then I tossed him again and he bounced forward and faceplants on the floor. His poor little nose is all red and scraped up. He cried pretty hard for a few minutes but he's acting totally normal now and eating his lunch happily.
So what signs do I need to look for in a possibly broken nose? It is swollen but not obviously crooked so far. It's been about 30 minutes.

Re: Did I break my kid's nose?!

My first grader technically broke her nose walking into a glass door on a field trip. The school nurse called me because it swelled and got black and blue very quickly. It never bled. I say technically broken because it's very hard for a child to break the actual bone in the nose. I took her in for x-rays. She had broken cartilage and was ordered to rest for the remainder of the day and then see an ent specialist to make sure it didn't require surgery. We went, the ent said it would heal fine on it's own and it did.

Re: Did I break my kid's nose?!

Sadly, we have had a few broken noses over the years as well as a few near misses. It seems like they have had the breaks when they caught their nose on something while falling. Like a bunkbed ladder or the edge of the dresser. The face plant falls have never cause a fracture(knock on wood). Bleeding as well as lots of swelling and bruising with in a couple hours of injury can be an indication that you should seek treatment.
Just in case.
