best detergent for cloth diapers...

What is the best organic or all natural detergent to use for cloth diapers? I have heard Charlies Soap is really good and goes a long way, and I have heard that free and clear detergents arent good because they dont get the amonia out so what is good to use? Thanks for the help!

Every person is different. Everyone has different water hardness levels, different diapers, different washing machines. It's impossible to say what will work for you.

Much as I like the idea of organic or all natural when it comes to diapers I much prefer clean. The all natural detergents don't seem to do as good a job of cleaning pee and poop as the mainstream detergents do. I have used 7th generation with success but have been told it isn't totally all natural so just switched to a cheaper mainstream detergent. We use all with equal success

we have city water (not hard or soft) & Allen's Naturally liquid works well for us. & it's cheap b/c it's super concentrated. I use it for all of our laundry & a gallon lasts me 6+ months.

Re: best detergent for cloth diapers...

Here's our cd cleaning supplies:
~Tide Original Powder, HE
~Ecover/Method softner
~Vinegar
~RLR

We've been CDing for two years now and have never had 'stinkies'. Here's what has worked for us:

We have 'normal' city water and a softner; and we have a FL washer. Tide works amazing for us, and the powder version seems to rinse out better than the liquid. Ecover/Method softner--- which ever is on sale, are a must have because we line dry everything. I use vinegar in our pre-rinse to help neutralize the urine. RLR we use every couple months to strip all the diapers. We use AIO's and fitteds--everything gets washed together.

-all poop gets plopped in the toilet and the diaper rinsed.
-all night time diapers are immediately rinse thoroughly and put in the washer on a 'rinse and spin' cycle and then thrown back in the wetbag until laundry day.
-we wash every other day.
-we use wet bags, never wetpail.

My wash routine:
-cold/cold hand wash, medium spin; 1/2c vinegar
-hot/cold heavy duty wash, high spin, extra rinse; tide to the 1 line
-warm/warm normal wash, high spin, extra rinse; ecover/method
-line dry until 90% dry
-fluff in dryer for 5-10 min

Feel free to ask me any questions if you need more details. I think the keys are washing often, extra washes if you have a FL washer, and giving your overnight diapers a little extra TLC. And Tide

Agree. I found Tide Free and Clear to be the best option for us.

I was all about green and stuff but in the end, diapers being clean and not smelling like we lived on a farm outweighed that.

I use regular ol HE Tide ultra powder. I use vinegar. I don't even have to use fabric softener. OH! And I wash all diapers on cold. So, so soft.

We had no issues with Charlie's. I think the key to laundry success is adding a bit of a good disinfectant. I use an 1/8c bleach every wash and our diapers come our clean and fresh.
