Re: traveling for L&D/pre natal care.

A birthing center 1 hour away from me opened right after baby #1 was born, and I was planning on using it for baby #2 (currently pregnant with). But I saw one of the midwives there in between pregnancies, and I discovered that it was really too far for me, personally. Because I already have a 1 hour each way commute to work, and the birthing center was 1.5 hours from where I work. So I would end up driving 3.5 hours each day that I had an appointment. I ended up going with a doctor who I can see 5 minutes away from home for prenatals, and the hospital I will deliver at is 1 hour away.

Basically I discovered that the travel distance for prenatals is more important to me than the hospital, because that is many visits vs. one visit for the birth. Like a PP, I plan on heading to the hospital early and getting a hotel room to labor in. I do NOT want to be stuck in the car in hard labor!

I drove an hour for prenatals and two hours to where I wanted to birth with both of mine. Unfortunately, my second came too quickly and I had her in the back of the midwife's car. It was still a beautiful experience, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat to avoid a hospital birth.

Re: traveling for L&D/pre natal care.

I live in Alabama and I drive 1 1/2 hours away to Chattanooga Tennessee to see a MW. It is hard to find MW in Alabama and I do not like the hospital care here. So, for the last two pregnencies, and this one as well, I have traveled. I do also have very long labors, so that makes a big difference. Going once a week at the end is a pain, and driving that far while in labor is a pain too! LOL But, it is all totally worth it to get the care I want and need.

Do you use Carolyn Drake? That's who delivered both of mine.

I go to Chattanooga Center for Women and see Amy Anderson. I deliver at Erlanger Women's East on Gunbarrel road.

This. Mine is 30 minutes away and with most birthing centers you do not go in at first labor pains. So you labor at home for a lot. I was a wild woman in the car. Holy sheep.

This is why my doula suggested getting a hotel room. So you get the long drive out of the way and you can relax knowing you're closer to the center.

Well I called to schedule and tour and talk about insurances and everything, it's looks like it would be $2400 for me to have a water birth :-/ and its free for me to have a hospital birth! So I guess it's another hospital birth
I was pretty apprehensive about the drive though.

I would travel 45min min-1 hr for my prenatal appts depending on which office I was seen at. The BC was 45 min from me. I didn't mind driving for the appts and I didn't mind the 45 min to the BC. The car ride during ctx wasn't the most comfy just because of the position but totally doable. I would travel farther if it meant I would get the birth I wanted with providers I liked.
