I was pretty apprehensive about the drive though.
Would the hospital be willing to do a water birth?

Oh ok! I was just curious. Carolyn is a home birth midwife that opens her home as a " birth center" of sorts. . It's a home birth away from home.

Re: traveling for L&D/pre natal care.

Well, we don't have a choice. The closest place to us that delivers babies is 100 miles away. We didn't go there last time because the doctors are all out of network. So we traveled over 3 hours for prenatals and to have the baby. I wasn't worried because my first labor was over 24 hours. Well, the second one was 4 hours. If we hadn't been packed up and already on the road when labor started, baby would have been born on the side of the road in the middle of the Nevada desert.

This time, we are going to go to the closer hospital (100 miles away) even though the doctors are in network.

Re: traveling for L&D/pre natal care.

I live in a rural area, the hospital I delivered #2 at is 45 min. away, and the birth center I plan to use for #3 is just over an hour away. So for me, it's not too much farther.

Hey, so cool... My son Logan was also born at Erlanger Womens East on Gunbarrel, and I also went to Chattanooga Center for Women... except I saw Dr. Collins and Dr. Brunvoll is the one that actually ended up delivering Logan... that was in 2006... we don't live up there anymore, but I *loved* that practice AND that hospital

My birth center was 1.5 hrs away. It wasn't so bad for prenatal care. DH and I found a few nice restaurants along the way, and that trip became our date night every week.
