Re: Saunas while pregnant?

I had always heard it wasn't a good idea. Especially in the first trimester. Supposedly it can raise your rate of neural tube defects. I would check with your doctor or midwife.

Re: Saunas while pregnant?

I don't like saunas, so I've never used one either pregnant or not, lol!
But I love hot tubs, and regularly use those while pregnant (as in, whenever I can!).

I would follow the same "rules" - make sure you don't get overheated (start sweating, feeling dizzy, etc), don't stay in too long.

Re: Saunas while pregnant?

I was told strictly no saunas, hot tubs, or steam rooms at all through pregnancy and most definitely not in the first tri They all raise your core body temp to unhealthy temps for a developing baby.

I was sooooo bummed because my gym has this amazing eucalyptus steam room and 4 hot tubs and 2 saunas, but sadly I was told to stay away. Sorry!

ETA: I have a history of loss, so maybe my doc was being overly cautious, but I would definitely ask your provider before taking any risks.

Re: Saunas while pregnant?

I wouldn't in the first trimester. A raised body heat rate can cause a miscarriage. I've heard to not even take hot baths. Of course, it's likely nothing will happen so it depends on if you're willing to take the risk or not.

You're probably fine as long as you go in briefly. As soon as you feel hot, your should leave. My OB told me hot baths are fine but hot tubs are no good.

the reason you can take hot baths, but are to avoid hot tubs, saunas, etc is because in a bath, the water cools down, whereas the others are continuous'y heated.

On that note, I would avoid them. BUT, if you want to get in, just stay for a very short while.

Re: Saunas while pregnant?

I took lots of hot baths and long hot showers, but never got in a hot tub or sauna. I think that for me it wouldn't be worth it because I like to be in a loooong time. But I also think that you would probably get very uncomfortable before your body got to a dangerous temperature, and you'd want to leave. I mean, even with a relatively mild fever your body can easily get above 102 or 103, and I don't think that is shown to be hazardous to a fetus, so you'd have to be in there a while to get it higher than that, I think.
