Adoptive BF'ing ~ Lact Aid or Medela?

We are currently fostering to adopt a 2 wk old baby. I'm wanting to BF and have looked at both the Lact Aid and Medela supplemental systems. I'm reading everything I can get ahold of re: adoptive BFing. We had an unsuccessful adoptive BFing experience many years ago with our first daughter (adopted at 5.5 months) but I think that was more because of my lack of knowledge.

Just curious what the pros/cons might be with either of these systems and of course, I would love to hear any stories of foster/adoptive BFing.

Definitely the Lact-aid. Medela is WAY too bulky and the tubing is more stiff. We have had our DS since birth and starting BF as soon as we were home. He was bottle fed for 3 days in hospital by birth mom. Started domperidone 60 mg 3 times/day when he stared nursing. I used the lact-aid until he was about 10 months, then I had enough milk between the other food and drinking from a bottle. He will be 2 yrs next week and is still nursing Nursing a toddler is the best, IMO, because there is no stress of if he's "getting enough."
Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions

are you hoping to attempt to nurse after the adoption is finalized? if not i am interested in the legalities.

The more reading I do, the more I'm finding the Lact Aid preferred due to exactly what you said ... the tubing and the container being so bulky. Thank you so much! I'm sure I will have more questions ~ thank you for being available.

Yes to the first question and I'm researching the issues regarding the legalities involved in the other issue. I'm finding it varies by state and county. I know that doesn't help much but as I learn more, I'd be happy to share.

interesting! i always thought it was pretty much a no go everywhere. is this LO legal risk or are you not sure where this is headed? we dont really have a straight adoption through foster care program here, only for special needs or older kiddos.

Re: Adoptive BF'ing ~ Lact Aid or Medela?

I am nursing my dd. She is four months old and her adoption will be finalized next spring. She was on IV fluids and then bottle fed formula for four days in the NICU. When offered the chance (after hospital Finally ok'd it) she promptly latched on and has nursed happily ever since. She is not foster - identified adoption through an agency. And I had an established supply as I was still nursing my at the time sixteen month old son. I nursed them both for about six weeks until I weaned him at eighteen months.

Agree about the lact-aid. Also really surprised that your case worker is OK with this - every story that I've heard has been that DHS/the state would not permit breastfeeding in a foster situation unless the birth parents specifically requested it. But your case worker is on board? That's awesome!

It isn't allowed here before finalization (unless its a private adoption).
