Toronto area, Ontario, Canada. Salaries start at 44k, but a first year teacher with a master's degree makes over 50k.

Re: Teachers, $?

I taught in a private school, so slightly lower than the public schools, but I started at $27K 6 years ago in NE Ohio

My BIL an hour south of here also teaching in a private school started (and had a salary freeze) at $21K...he went back to school for nursing after 2 years because they just couldn't afford to live on that income.

My 1st yr back in 2005, with all local incentives 1st yr pay (just a bachelors) was $27,000. Base starting pay for NC teachers was jut shy of $25000.

In VA, teachers start somewhere in the $30,000s and it varies from one county to the next.

I started at 34k in 2007 with a masters. It's around the same now with budget cuts. Insurance was covered 100% then but premiums have skyrocketed and are about $400/mo now.
