Highest paying private school in the metro region in Michigan starts at 27000. Masters adds 4500. After a masters and 8 years, 3 of which were salary freezes and two of which were only 1%, I'm at 36000. I wouldn't go public unless absolutely necessary for my family.

My district starts at $40,306 in central Indiana. Our new pay system doesn't care what your degree is. You start at 0.

The top of our current schedule is about $80k.

I love this thread because in CA we are being turned into the villains that are bringing the state to bankruptcy. I can't tell the number of times I have heard the media talk about how CA teachers are the highest paid in the nation although we rank only 47th in education. Some of their facts come from the fact that we have old faculty that make more. I am the youngest teacher in my department at 38 with 13yrs experience. When you factor in the cost of living between CA and central Ill., I don't think we are paid too much (starting in the mid 40's).

NC has a state salary, then each county (I believe each one) has supplement pay. For the first 4 years teachers start at 35,189. Then they make about $400 more.

They have kept us at the same pay scale for several years. I've been teaching for 16 years, so my salary is more. On paper I make a decent amount-but my take home barely sustains our family (my dh works part-time, so I am the insurance holder, bread winner).

You also have to look at the cost of medical insurance to give a fair comparison. My district starts at 40K, but the family medical HMO is about $1100 a month. That is a huge chunk of salary gone right there if you need to use our insurance.
