Amazon return - do i need a box for UPS?

I have never returned anything online before, but we got something that is the wrong size (the amazon description is clearly wrong). So to return it I have a UPS label and packing slip to print out from amazon and I'm supposed to take it to a drop site.

Can I just bring it as-is or does it need to be in a box? It's a weird size and I don't have any plain boxes that size laying around.

The original item was shipped with something huge, so if I use the box it came in it'll be 4 times bigger than it needs to be (huge!!) and I don't have anything to fill that empty space with (maybe newspaper??). Please tell me I can just bring it in without a box and let them deal with it. I'm already disappointed that their mistake is causing this big delay and hassle. Anyone know their UPS stuff?

They won't provide you a box at no charge. You either have to pay for them to repackage it or bring it in ready to ship. If they sent you a packing slip, it was for postage on the original box and you need to send that, as stupid as that sounds.

yep, in the past i have just used the original box, even though it was too large.

Definitely send it back in the box you got it in...their problem!

And now I'm off to package a small item in a comically large box. I was worried that boxes over certain sizes cost extra, but sounds like it's their problem.

You can cut the 4 corners of the box vertically to.fold it flatter.
