I would say for full time wool you could get by with 5 pairs. Ideally I like to have 7-10, just to allow for some variety and time to wash if necessary. In reality we have more though, as we just love wool so much and then they do not wear as quickly

Also, crocheted wool works great as soakers. It just depends on the look you prefer. Some people prefer knit, some prefer crochet. I knit, so most of ours are knit, but we do have some crochet longies which I love too!

Yes night weight is thicker wool. Like, I love our loveybums interlock pull-up wool for day, but it is too thin for night. You definitely need two nighttime soakers or pants, we have just one sbish soaker that works for night so when I wash I need something else for the two days it takes to dry.
I love wool and fitteds, but I would advise that you wait until your LO is here to see what you like before you go nuts on your stash. I know everyone says that, but I didn't listen and I wish that I had. Now I have a stash of pockets and some covers that don't work for my DD.
I also can't imagine using wool on a newborn full time. I know people do it, and I do want to make a wool sack for our next baby, but I'd plan on having a couple of newborn PUL covers to have on hand. Nighttime poopy diaper changes + wool sounds like it would have been way more than I could have handled.

12 or so is probably good, for a newbie it's nice to have quite a few b/c they can (and will) poo down the legs of them. Who knows how many will be waiting to dry while you're wearing the others.
As Kellen got older we did as many as 20 pair per fall/winter. I just get bored with the same pair over and over. Right now we have 5-6, I just finished 2 more pair and I have 4 on the way. I'm so sick of the ones we have already, and we don't even wear cloth diapers anymore, so he wears reg clothes sometimes. I just have a wool problem. They're so snuggly!

I crocheted 2 newborn longies already! Will crochet more when I get more yarn but also waiting when I get pregnant and finding out the sex.. I don't want to make skirties for a boy!
