Re: Paying for college

We have something similiar where kids who are 16+ can take college courses, homeschooled or public schooled. I forget what it's called though. I did that when I was in school.

Re: Paying for college

I'm on the fence about helping out with my children's college.

Once I moved out after high school, I paid for everything...tuition, books, rent, utilities, car insurance, food...EVERYTHING. Though I do recall my parents paying a $200 bill once for getting my car fixed, but that's it. I got a bachelor's degree, then a J.D. (law school), and then a teaching certificate. DH paid for everything as soon as he graduated high school and has a bachelor's and a teaching certificate. Both of us are very good with money, and I'm sure it has to do with being responsible for our own finances so early.

I think we are going to start putting some money into savings for them, but starting next year, I'll be staying home, and DH will be earning a teacher's salary, so not very much.

Unlike many of you, DH and I can afford to put our 3 kids through college. That said, we won't be. We highly value the ability to attend college because you made it happen, not because someone paid your whole way. We will help with things like rent, food, books, etc. Maybe even parts of tuition, but there will be no "free ride" from mom and dad.

We are however, taking care of our own retirement funds. Our kids will not have to "care" for us when we are old. We will have money for any medical bills, insurance etc. We aren't depending on social security, medicare, etc.
