IF you do a wet pail...
what do you put in it?
just water? vinegar? we're battling ammonia here w/ DS who is dry during the day (He'll be 3 in April). I've been soaking his night-time diapers in a pail (that is in the basement and up high). We use mostly sbish obfs (so bleach is a no-no), snapless and flats. We rockingreen soap, and have used it since DS was born w/ no major issues. I'm thinking of either getting bac-out or using the ammonia bouncer.

Re: IF you do a wet pail...
Ammonia means there are solids not being cleansed from diapers. You can try, try, try but sometimes there are limits to what you can do without the help of big branded detergents.
Ammonia happens when tiny solids get trapped in diapers. These solids contain urease, which reacts immediately to produce ammonia when it meets with urea (found in urine). Sanitizers will work for a little while, but the problem usually returns quickly. I have always found that a few washes with recommended dose of regular Tide clears up this problem. You want to do your whole stash, wetbags and give your bucket a good scour. If you have any local diaper services you might check to see if they have a 'freshening' service. Diaper services are very dialed in when it comes to wash chemistry, the can usually take care of ammonia problems in a single cycle.

Re: IF you do a wet pail...
I think i'm going to try in5 gallon bucket with lid.I put in detergent and mixed each time I put new one in. I was good & just throw in washer for regular cycle. I stopped as my storage container was hard to empty.

Re: IF you do a wet pail...
I also vote for using Tide to get your dipes really clean! I also liked to rinse all night dipes in cold water (not just #2s) before tossing them in my wet bag & washing dipes daily to cut down on how long the nasties in them could multiply.

Re: IF you do a wet pail...
I put my toddler's nighttime diaper inserts into a bucket with water and a little bit of soap. On wash day I run them through a rinse/spin with bleach (I dilute the bleach to about 60% before I add it b/c i have a FLer and it doesn't always mix everything up right away). Then I run a regular diaper cycle.

I use a 5 gal bucket with vinegar, it just sits in my spare bathroom bathtub, and we keep the door closed. I also rinse everything out again before it goes in the wash. No more ammonia for my nighttime fitted.

Re: IF you do a wet pail...
I've actually tried tide and it didn't work. I can't do bleach because they are bamboo. Anyone use ammonia bouncer? I might try vinegar...

Re: IF you do a wet pail...
bleach and bamboo really are no-nos. I am using sbish fitteds and it'll eat straight through them.
