Re: When is everyone's first appointment?

Yay ladies .

Question, usually you don't see a heartbeat until around 6 weeks or so, right? I know I'm going in a little on the early side this time. I am not completely sure why, I think they were maybe booked up and this was an opening.? I was also maybe because I already had my annual scheduled for this month before I knew I was pregnant.
Thanks!

Re: When is everyone's first appointment?

Well, l reported that i got cancelled from my appt due to an insurance issue. I realized it was a good opportunity for me to go ahead and switch to the midwife group who does waterbirth (in an amazingly big tub). So I took the plunge and switched. First appointment is Jan 10th. I will almost be 11 weeks! But oh well, I know they see people later and I am doing just fine. Of course I want to see that hb for my own assurance but I know this bean is doing well so far. I can already feel my uterus almost up halfway to my bellybutton!

Yes, I believe the heart begins to beat during the sixth week. Some doctors want to see you around/before then just to do bloodwork and get you started on prenatals. They may or may not do an u/s that early since they likely wouldn't see a hb until mid/late 6 weeks. I wonder if they'll just have you come back for the u/s? My old doctor did it this way but my first appointment was just with the nurse. I went back at 8-9 weeks for the u/s; I think 8-9 weeks is pretty standard for the first u/s if a doctor does one.

Re: When is everyone's first appointment?

Wow, I never knew so many doctors did early ultrasounds! Is this the norm? I had one early ultrasound at the ER because I thought I was either miscarrying or had an ectopic pregnancy (my mom has a history of this) since my cramping was so bad. The other time was because I was nursing and didn't have a regular period, so we had no idea when we conceived. Are more OBGYNs doing early ultrasounds? Or is it still the typical 20 weeks? My previous doctors wouldn't even check for a heartbeat on doppler until around week 12.

This pregnancy is very different than any I had before (IVF-surrogacy). We will be doing an ultrasound on the 20th of this month to check my lining and make sure baby is doing well. After the ultrasound they will let me know what meds and how much I still need to take.

After that (and after injections end-- usually around 10-11 weeks) we will be released to a OBGYN.

We saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks. My previous OB's wouldn't even see me until the 8th week or after. I think one time they didn't even schedule me until almost the 12th-- I was a little concerned with that!

Maybe it is because you had an annual coming up

Re: When is everyone's first appointment?

Mmm? Well that is good, I should be around 7 weeks. I did go to the same OB the last three pregnancies and the U/S is done at the first appointment. I've already had my blood taken just to check my progesterone levels to see if I needed supplements due to my previous miscarriage and pregnancy. This is a week or two earlier than I've gone before so I wanted to make sure we'd have a chance of seeing a hb. With my first dd we didn't have an ultrasound until our second visit (11 weeks) with the current place it has always been the first appointment. If I remember right I thought it was more like 8-9 weeks. Thanks for the info ladies and I guess we will see

Yes, in my area nearly all of the OBs do a transvaginal u/s at the first appointment to look for a heartbeat and check basic measurements to see an approximate due date and whether baby looks normal for that stage. There is typically another one at 20 weeks too for the anatomy scan and that is it.

Also, I don't think the hb can be found on Doppler until 12-16 weeks? I don't remember when exactly but I'm pretty sure it can't be detected before around the end of the 1st tri/early 2nd tri. I know it can be tough to find for a bit even then.

It varies depending on the size/build of the mother. I think around 10 weeks is really about the earliest you would pick up hb on a Doppler tho.

To the pp : most obs in my area also do an early transvaginal scan for dating purposes, I don't thin I'll have one this time unless something seems amiss. I know when I ovulate so I'm confident in my dates within a 3 day margin and I'll be paying for this pregnancy entirely OOP.
