Natural ADD remedies?

My 10yo dd has every one of the inattentiveness symptoms of ADD and I'm not sure how to help her. She is not truly ADHD and I am not near considering medicating her, although it has affected her school report card. Has anyone used an alternative treatment that has helped? I'm thinking of trying a small cup of coffee in the mornings since caffeine is a stimulant. And maybe a piece of very dark chocolate at lunch? idk.

Re: Natural ADD remedies?

I am having somewhat of the same issue, although the report card has not been affected so far, and I'm researching natural things to do too. I give her valerian root as needed for calm and focus but the best thing I've found for her is a little time and attention. She responds really well to that. When she is acting out I try to keep her with me as much as possible and that seems to help. She responds very well to praise and I also try to give her jobs around the house that require attention to detail as she is so good with that. (Scrubbing stains, stuff like that) I will look more into herbal remedies as needed. I hope you find something that works, I think there is a lot of trial and error with this type of child, not really needing actual medication but needing SOMETHING.

Re: Natural ADD remedies?

I just purchased a fantastic book called "Non-Drug Treaments for ADHD" by Richard P. Brown and Patricia Gerbarg (no affiliation; just love the book!). The authors are clinical psychiatry professors at Columbia University and New York School of Medicine. There are dozens of suggestions inside, ranging from herbs and vitamins to breathing techniques. Hope that helps! :0)

Re: Natural ADD remedies?

Oh, and the authors do address the inattentive ADHD subtype-- not just the hyperactive one!

Re: Natural ADD remedies?

I knew a mom that gave her kids a cup of coffee. It helped.

I would also consider it might be that she is not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can sometimes manifest as hyperactivity or inattentiveness. School age kids should get 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night.

Look into Feingold diet. Get rid of all artificial colors, flavors, etc and a few other foods. Helps a LOT of behavior problems. Good luck!

Fish oil, enough sleep
There is a link b/t ADD/ADHD-like behaviors and low iron. It often does not show up in a CBC, it needs to be looked at specifically (ferritin, TIBC, % Saturation, etc)
