I don't think it originated as an Italian name because half the sites claim it's Italian and Russian, hence the two different pronunciations. But all the ones that were saying it was Italian were pronouncing it Vi o letta. When I asked my MIL (she's Italian) she thought it was Vy letta, with the o being silent.

I know lots of Violettas (mostly eastern europeans) and they are all pronounced with a long e.
