How do you know if your young child needs Glasses?

I have a 21 month old who falls constantly. My dad has bad vision, and so do my sisters. I did until I got laser vision correction. He falls over nothing. Then the thought crossed my mind, does he have bad vision? How can an eye Dr. Tell if they have poor vision if they can't read letters yet??

They look at the inner workings of the eye to tell excatly what is needed. but I thinkas far as needing to go into the eye doctor in most cases they look for cross eyes, or if the baby is reaching for objects, moving towards them, that sort of thing. I think at the age you are talking about they may look for squinting or other clues.

I think if you are conserned a trip to the eye doctor wouldn't hurt.

I bring mine to the eye doctor before they are a year and every year after. They use toys and have tools to tell.

An eye doctor will be able to tell. If it is not the eyes themselves, there are also cortical visual issues, which can be discovered through a functional visual evaluation, and balance/coordination issues, which a Occupational and/or Physical Therapy evaluation will uncover. DD1 goes to the eye doctor annually since birth because she was a preemie.

Thanks for the help. Do I take him to any eye doc, or are there ones who specialize in pedi?

I would call your pediatrician and ask who does this locally in your area. They can recommend someone.

There are pediatric specialists. We have med school near us, and I like taking my kids there because the students are generally awesome, and then the professors come and double check their work, so you really get 2 exams.

Can you just ask him if he can see things? My kids feel/fall over everything and nothing too. Some of it when little is from just not watching where they are going / going to fast...... You could just ask pedi on you're concern for other ideas to see if they think it needs more thinking....

Ds2 got his first pair at age 2 plus 6 weeks. His eye randomly started crossing when he tried to focus on something. We had him checked through an opthomologist (not an optometrist because at that age they are too young to TELL the dr how well they can see things)
