If you don't do santa...

What do you tell your little kids? DH hates the idea of Santa and thinks it's a big lie. He really wants to always be truthful with the kids. ODD is nine and knows the truth. DS wasn't really aware of it last year, had just turned 3, so we ignored it. This year though he's noticing Santa everywhere. Plus people talk about it. It's impossible. I'm not sure what to tell him...this is more DH's thing. If you don't do Santa how do you deal with Santa everywhere? !

Re: If you don't do santa...

I have no advice. I did santa with my older two, came clean this year and swore I wouldn't do it with my youngest. Well she comes home from preschool singing xmas songs and gets excited every time she sees 'Santa'. I don't even know what to do. I hate to squelsh it you know?

Re: If you don't do santa...

this short blog piece sums up what we do =)
http://onfaith.washingtonpost.com/on...out_santa.html

and I will add instead of stocking we do "party bags" each child has a gift bag and we fill that like we would a stocking because you get party bags at birthday parties - hehe. We also still do presents wrapped under the trr but all the presents are marked to the child from "your family"

My son had his Christmas program at preschool today and they surprise the kids with a visit from Santa afterwards. I'm not sure how I feel about it.... My son was just confused. We never talk about Santa so he doesn't really know what he is. I'm not sure if I should say anything or leave it alone..

Re: If you don't do santa...

I plan to teach my child about the persona on which Santa is based - St. Nicholas.
and I will tell her that people like to pretend to be St. Nicholas and so they dress up as 'Santa'.

The lesson is great about giving. It's just how it's become a lesson in recieving that I'm mostly against.

ETA: I have always loved that blog post linked above. I don't know if that's a new one, but it's very similar to one I've read in previous years. I don't understand people who demonize Santa or get all upset about Santa - I think it's an opportunity to teach.

Our girls watch Christmas movies and read Christmas books, so they've been exposed to Santa. They just think he's a character just like any other character in a movie or book. We don't even discuss it anymore than we do Angelina ballerina or Elmo.

Re: If you don't do santa...

I grew up knowing that Santa Claus wasn't really real. My parents told us he was pretend. So, we left out cookies and milk and got presents from "Santa" as part of the pretend, but we knew it was mom and dad who ate the cookies and left the presents and stocking stuffers. Honestly, I insisted on leaving out cookies and milk through high school. It's a fun tradition. It's possible to "do" Santa without lying. I plan on doing the same with my DD when she's older (she's 6 months, so it's not really a thing this year).

Re: If you don't do santa...

I told them that Santa is a figure of Christmas and some families believe he brings toys to all the kids around the world, and other families don't believe that. I also told them he is just a part of the "Christmas spirit" just like wrapping paper, snow (if you have it), candy canes, etc.

I should say, my child is 2. This is the most she can understand about it.
