My OB was happy to schedule mine at 25 weeks so it would land on our 2013 insurance deductible. There was really no concern other than "welllll, that's not how we *normally* do it". We ended up declining the scan anyway, but a late scan wasn't a problem, especially since we wouldn't abort or do anything drastic if there was a problem that showed up. I think that's one of the main reasons behind the push for it to be right at 20 weeks - legal abortion limits.

Maybe they want the scans done before you are past the abortion limit like a PP said? That is the only reason I can think they would be so insistent that it be done before 22 weeks. Weird, but glad they were able to find a time to squeeze you in!

Re: Anatomy scan after 22 weeks?

My first OB's office demanded I do it between 18 and 20 weeks, and said it's "impossible" afterward. They actually told me they can't see what they need to see, because the baby isn't as transparent. I told them I wouldn't choose to abort even if I found out there was a problem, and I had a vacation 18-20 weeks ... they hadn't told me earlier of their policy. Still they insisted it wasn't because of the abortion time limits.

My second OB's office said the first OB was being weird, and that they do push for the earlier US because of abortion time limits ... because a lot of people who say they wouldn't, do if a serious abnormality like anencephaly is discovered.

My second OB tried at 20 weeks, but LO was in a weird position. So we re-did it at 25 weeks. There was no problem at all.

Re: Anatomy scan after 22 weeks?

I am having mine at 28 weeks...I have a low lying placenta and in order to check it's location and to do the anatomy scan they are doing them together so insurance covers it. The placenta check will be early and the anatomy later than usual but they will both get done. My Dr didn't seem a single bit concerned about doing it that late.

I don't understand why your doctors office is so insistent on that
Time frame. My doctor didn't even bat an eye lash to schedule mine at 26 weeks. That's weird...

Re: Anatomy scan after 22 weeks?

Well, I had my anatomy scan at 24 weeks on my last pregnancy. It varies according to the OB's schedule and the development of the baby. I was glad that my youngest is at normal state.

Re: Anatomy scan after 22 weeks?

Should be fine! I had mine with DD at 24w. I had it set up for 21w and then the Dr was sick and then we were on vacation. But they saw everything they needed to so it was okay.
