Re: We have the flu and Im delivering via CS in 5 days!HELP!

((hugs)). DH and I didn't have the flu during my 4th baby's c-section, but we had colds. Coughing and runny noses, etc. The doc was able to give me meds that dried me up and I didn't have any cough spells after the c-section. We tried to be the most careful we could be, but then with coming home and the other kids having colds too... baby girl got her first cold at like 1-1/2 weeks old. Then she had one for the rest of cold/flu season, it seemed like! The price of having older siblings... My youngest brother (the 7th) got the chicken pox at 1 week old (he did splendidly, thankfully).
ANyway, definitely call the doc and get his/her thoughts. I would say no to the sibings visiting at the hospital (but yes to dh! maybe with a mask?). Stay as long as you can at the hospital before coming home to give yourself more time to heal up and also to give the house more time to get clean and air out.

So sorry this has happened!

I would reschedule also, and I'm sure you already know but wash everything. Everyones sheets, blankets, wipe down doorknobs, & things often. And changing pillow cases often can help with not spreading germs. I would also have everyone start taking vitamin c and elderberry to boost yours/babies and families immune system. Good luck mama

I would reschedule, regardless of your OB. I don't mean this to be rude but their are plenty of competent OBs that can do csections, its not a specialty. So unless you are having an unusually complicated c section I'd ask his recommendation for another competent OB that can do your c section.

Even if you aren't sick currently your immune system is still recovering. I'd also be terrified of your new squish catching the flu so young.

Except not just you and baby - I'd worry more about spreading it to other mamas and babies in there. I mean, I wouldn't want my baby having troubles, but where you've been sick and are around all your family, baby is going to be born with some of that immunity and then if you're breast-feeding will be getting antibodies through your milk.

Yup, while I understand that it would be nice to have your own OB doing the c-sec, unless there are certain specific circumstances making it necessary that your own OB do it, I would definitely reschedule.

Of course, you never know - all the rescheduling and planning in the world may not matter! Baby may decide to come all on his own and this would all be a moot point!

Agree with the others; I would postpone. Baby could be a little early and that increases the changes that he would catch an infection, and also babies born by c section have compromised immune systems because of being initially colonized with hospital bacteria vs mom's vaginal flora during birth. I am not criticizing, just pointing out afact that I think makes it better to wait until everyone feels be tter.
Sorry for the typos; typing on my phone is crazy difficult today!

So sorry mama! I am a pediatric nurse & I would post-pone if you can just because the new baby can get sick SO easy. Newborns have no immune system & get the flu & RSV (a respiratory virus) very easy with sometimes severe courses!
Rest & hydrate!

Just reschedule mama Fridays aren't really the BEST day for a c/s anyhow, you really want to shoot for tues-wed when all the specialists, lac. consultants and the best docs are on staff. Did they talk to you about taking Tamiflu?

Re: We have the flu and Im delivering via CS in 5 days!HELP!

My OB only does scheduled c-sections on Fridays.Everyone but youngest DS is feeling tons better. My oldest is back to his crazy self with no cough and barley a runny nose.I sound like a man and have the slightest congestion and occasional small cough.DH is the same as I.But youngest DS is still coughing and runny nose.I see my ob on Wed so we will see what he says.
also my DH is only off for this from thur to next sat. That sucks!

Maybe you could schedule it for next week? A friend of a friend got diagnosed with Flu A on Friday and had her baby on Saturday and wasn't allowed to hold her baby at all until she' d had tamiflu for 48 hours, then fever free for 24 hours. She still hasn't held her baby (on Monday. I think she still has a few more hours to wait). This seems crazy to me bc I think with a mask and gloves they'd at least let her hold the baby...but she's in the hospital, so... Since you'll be in the hospital, I'd probably try to schedule it for next week.
