Re: SEVERELY chapped lips. What to do?

We have the same problem here and have been using lanolin. It has gotten to the point that I have to pin DD down to use it though and she says it is bad.."nasty sheep". Anyone know if there is a WAHM that makes a lip balm with lanolin?

Re: SEVERELY chapped lips. What to do?

i agree, most chapsticks on the market are terrible. carmex for a bad case and crack is good but I always change up the topicals. my kids and I get really dry in the cold winters here...
coconut oil works but its not thick enough for me. I try to go for things w out beeswax as its to harsh and firm on my lips. it just pulls at it. peppermint, olive oil, shea butter is great. eos is ok too but has alot of beeswax so I cant use it more than once a day.

check health food stores, they tend to have the best stuff and selection

Re: SEVERELY chapped lips. What to do?

I know this has been covered over and over and over, but lanolin is the best IMO! When my twins were born their lips looked chapped, so we asked what we could put on it. I had Burts Bees in my bag, but wasn't sure if they should have it due to the whole infant/honey thing. The nurses & LC said to use Lanolin and we've been using it ever since!

I'll look into that product. Thank you.

I am sure you did not! However....good to avoid in future and especially if your child tends to lick it off......shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil....etc. all are cheap, fine to eat and work great.

Re: SEVERELY chapped lips. What to do?

Well the lanolin seems to be doing the trick!

The swelling is finally down (it was so bad that it was hard to understand him when he spoke and his bottom lip was LITERALLY 2 to 3 times larger than normal from the swelling due to constant picking and the cracking).

We put lanolin on his lips several times yesterday afternoon and evening, and then again before bed. I went into his room in the middle of the night and put more lanolin on his lips. Then again several times today.

There are only a few scabs left, they aren't bleeding, the swelling is gone.

So... looks like the lanolin is taking care of it. I've also been putting the lanolin on my lips and it's working great!

Thanks everyone.

God bless!

Re: Update! It wasn't chapped lips! Cold sores!!!! SEVERELY chapped lips. What to do?

Glad you figured it out and boo! to cold sores. I hope he heals up quickly! I don't get them but DH does. I know your guy is still young, but he will continue to get them now that he has had an outbreak so it's important to educate him on proper care. Never share drinks , wash hands (don't touch your eyes! - you can get them there) and to be cautious with everyone else in the house as it can transfer easily even on cloth. My DH can tell he's getting one by the start of a tingling feeling. Also, I think (aside from low immunity, fever) excess sun exposure and actually even chapped lips can lead to an outbreak. I know nothing about this ointment, but saw it advertised recently
Little LipsTM Super Lysine+TM 7 gm Ointment http://www.kidscoldsores.com/ Hope he feels better soon!

I use herpacin-L for cold sores. However, I am not sure if it can be used on children.

I comes in a blue tube and looks like chap stick.
