Ok, well my theory is this....

It's a once in a life time occasion. It cant be repeated or done at a later date and it's obviously important to you. If I was you I'd make sure it happened.

E might enjoy the camp but he'll forget about it in a couple of years. This is something you'll remember forever. Sometimes we have to remember that we're important too.

Ok, the laptop is a thing...but it can be paid for over time, so you could still get a good one and it wont cost the earth (IDK if you're totally against that) and you can still go on your trip.

Cutting a few corners on the summer trip to have a memorable 10th wedding anniversary with your wife is worth it IMO but in the end it's down to you two to decide.

Mel I don't know what to say. I get the whole want to go. Does Ru want to as well? I don't have the same desire to get away that others have. We may go off to a bed and breakfast in SantaFe in feb or mar to celebrate bdays and anniversaries. Sometimes I wonder if I should want to go away more. I just prefer to travel with all three of us...I am odd like that. I am as happy for a nice afternoon evening away as I am for a big trip.

I dont want to go away either but that's my ADHD and my need to be around my things as well as anxiety about going to new places that's stopping me.

None of that with me Janine. My parents took us on trips. I like to see MH see things for the first time. When I go on a big trip I want to see her and Jerry see it all. I wonder if it comes from knowing that Jerry NEVER got to travel before me. So he also likes to take her with us on trips.

For iPad apps - Sadie and I both like temple run brave and subway surfers, too. There isn't much for learning there, just fun.

I am sure Ru wants to go, but not necessarily to the same level that I do. I wouldn't mind doing a staycation closer to home, even with E (something like Great Wolf Lodge) but everything is booked for that weekend already, unless people call and cancel later.

I know I am being whiny. It's not rational. I am sure I'll get over it, but right now it is bothering me.

Ok, I am a weird one too. If for my anniversary DH took me to Costco I would be stoked. Or to Minneapolis for a short weekend and a concert. That would make my head spin. Like Jen though, I feel selfish taking trips without the kids. I travelled a bit as a kid and want my kids to do it too. And for us there aren't people lining up for babysitting duty. I hate having to beg for it.

Can you go a different weekend Mel? I think celebrating near the time is fine. But then I have to anniversaries to choose from

Re: Basically it's Friday.

But that being said Mel, I totally get people having "things" that they want, irrationally. Says the woman that just got a $400 blender. For me it is kitchen stuff. Other people are into electronics or clothes etc. You like to travel. We all have our things.
Oh and Janine, I don't really blame him. I like the Android stuff and given the choice I would get a Nexus 7 over an iPad. That is on my wishlist, because I prefer to read on the iPad over my kindle in the house/at night but the kids are constantly running the battery down or nagging me to use it.
