You just have to have finalized the child's adoption in the last year to claim the expenses on your taxes.

It's for any child as long as you have adoption expenses. If the child is special needs, you can claim the credit regardless of whether you have any expenses or not.

I'm not an adoptive parent, but have many friends who are, so I'm well aware of the importance of this credit. I've been following this issue closely, but with all the hustle & bustle of the holidays, only just learned that it was extended. Hooray!
