With my first, My midwife swept mine, at my request, at 41+2 and I went into labor about 6 hours later. I agree that it probably won't do much good unless your body is ready and I wouldn't have it done unless baby's head is fully engaged. I went into labor with my second and third at 40+3 and 39+3 respectively, so didn't need them swept.

Re: Membrane Sweep?

If your body is ready, it can bring labor on. If you're not ready, it will likely bring cramping, a few contractions, and you may lose some of your plug.

Re: Membrane Sweep?

I was swept on my due date. It was about 2pm. I had some contractions beginning around 5pm that evening, they never really got stronger and completely subsided by 11pm.
At 3:15am I woke up to a stronger one. They were then about 4-5 minutes apart and lasting about 30+ seconds. I got to the hospital at 5:30, got checked around 6:30 and was a 6 (I was a 3-4 at my appt the day before). He was born at 9:30am

It DID put me into labor and he was born about 19.5 hours after I had been swept.

My daughter came naturally at 39w0d so I didn't do anything with her.

My due date was 12/27 and I had him the 28th. I wonder how long I would've gone, but I wanted him born before the 31st to get the tax credit

Re: Membrane Sweep?

I have also heard if it didn't hurt it wasn't done right and won't work.
Mine HURT!!! If it was just uncomfortable, it probably won't work!

Like others have said, they don't work unless your body is ready.
why did they start at 36? I've heard 39+ for sweeps.

Re: Membrane Sweep?

My midwife does them around 39wks. Mine did the sweep at my 39wks only because she was gonna be oncall that night and wanted to deliver me. It hurt to high heaven, but it worked. I went to the hospital that afternoon and was having contracts. Water broke and baby was born shortly after!
With my first baby, no amount of sweeps would have done anything. If it wasn't for my induction (broke my water, that's it) I think I'd still be pregnant with her.

Haha sorry no I have not gone into labor. I am just a space cadet an forgot to check back in. Not much has happened, some bloody show but no real cramping or anything worth mentioning.

I went 12 days late with my last (first) one they did the gel on my cervix. It sucked!!! Hopin to avoid that this time!!

Thanks for all the feedback!
