What do you think of a doula who has never given birth?

Or a Lactation Consultant who has never had or nursed a baby?

A friend of mine is persuing a Doula/LC career and she's doesn't have any kids. I think she'll be a great doula, but I've never used one, so I don't know if having experienced childbirth is a big part of knowing what to do. I don't think I'd love getting advice from an LC who doesn't quite understand that feeling of nipples on fire.....

I don't think I would love that, but I have never asked my LCs if they have children, so who knows, maybe I have had one that doesn't.

It would feel hard to relate I think in both situations. Sometimes experience is the best teacher

I wouldn't use a doula who's never given birth. Just as I wouldn't use a doula who's never had an unmedicated birth.

I would maybe see an IBCLC who hasn't breastfed, if I just needed routine advice. I would prefer to see someone who's been there/done that, though.

Re: What do you think of a doula who has never given birth?

Part of my aversion to her as an LC is that sometimes she tried to teach me things..... she's as educated on the subject (at this point) as I am except I've nursed 2 kids.... I mean.... the research she's done so far were from books I lent her. So this may color my thoughts.

For me, I wouldn't use anyone who doesn't have first hand personal experience.

Re: What do you think of a doula who has never given birth?

I had a C/S with DS almost 2 years ago and never experienced labor or a "real birth" but I am in training to become a Doula. It doesn't matter to me, and I hope it wouldn't hinder anyone's choice to choose me to be their Doula.

Re: What do you think of a doula who has never given birth?

At first glance, I feel like I would want someone who'd been there done that. Then I remember that my absolute favorite L&D nurse in the world (had him with my 2nd and 3rd children) is a man, so he obviously hadn't BTDT.

But seriously, when he had to monitor me and the baby, he would do accupressure on my hands and rub my back and encourage me. Seriously, this last baby was my best labor ever. He gave my DH suggestions (without seeming pushy or know-it-all-ey) on how to help me. He is an awesome nurse and would make an awesome doula.

So, yeah, my favorite L&D nurse gives me pause about the necessity of having given birth or breastfed...

It doesn't bug me. My obgyn is a man, so he obviously hasnt btdt. He's an amazing caregiver and a very good physician.
