Sign language...what stage did you teach yours?

With DD1, we taught sign language at around six months which helped her tremendously in communication when she was hungry or thirsty but we don't remember how early we started (probably not early enough?). How early did you start teaching your children sign language? We have a seven week old and wondering how early is too early if there's such thing.

Nope, not too early. They are already learning spoken language from hearing you talk. We started basic sign with DD2 right away and she started signing "milk" to request nursing at 6 months.

Okay DD1 did do the same around six months and around 10 months she did ask for water. I guess we'll start early, just wasn't sure how people did sign language with a newborn.

Not early at all. We started with my non verbal daughter at 14 months and she picked it up super quick (like 250 signs by 18 months)

We started with my youngest after seeing awesome results with my other dd at about 4 months. She knows a handful now at 13 months. We just are not as strict with it because she is not delayed at all.

Re: Sign language...what stage did you teach yours?

we start signing right away while we talk we don't drill or anything, just when we know a sign.

never too early-- I think of it as talking or singing to my babies-- I do them all. Helps me not forget them to use them all the time.

we've slacked a bit with #2, but he gets his point across. big sister likes to work with him, but he tends to sign with dh.

I love when they combine talking and signing to get out their thoughts adorable. like learning how to put together a puzzle. We were just looking for birds and cats out our window. DS likes the sign where and just picked up bird... now there are both ducks and birds... lol... love it.

I started at birth. he is 1 in a few days and uses the milk sign only. he points a lot so i guess he doesn't feel that he needs to use the signs much.

We started 3-4 months signing as we talk some basic signs.
At a year dd signs milk, more, drink, tired and all done.

We started fairly early, but she didn't use them until after a year.. she just wasn't interested.

I don't think you're starting too early. It's just an association.
