We have small chest freezer that I'm sure would hold at least a quarter, possibly a half. When my parents used to buy beef from a farmer hours away, they took coolers with them to pick it up. Maybe borrow one or two if you don't already have a couple?

Our place has a refrigerated truck that makes deliveries and it's all part of it. I think our farmer initially recommended an 8 cf freezer but we got one that was a touch under 14 and we were really happy with the result. This way we had room to maneuver things around inside without having to put stuff on the floor.

Also, ask those farms if they ship to any closer butchers/lockers. You may find they already ship locally and you wouldn't have to worry about disetance so much. You only need to pick up from the butcher, so the farm location isn't as important.

Yep...you'll never be able to eat a corn fed beef. Highly recommend it We bought ours through a co-worker whose sister owns a farm...one of the best pork and chicken we've had too!

Re: Where did you find your side of beef? Looking to buy half a cow....

This may seem like a silly question, but how much does a cow weigh? I found a grass farm within an hour from me and their beef is 4.99/lb ~ if I were to buy a 1/4 of beef, how much would it weigh? I know that this will vary largely, but I just wanted to get a rough estimate.

Avg dressed weight is 700-800lb.

Do they charge for live or dry carcass weight? Or take home weight?

This farm only charges for take home weight ~ is $4.99 /lb a reasonable price?

ETA: Is 700-800 for 1/4 a cow or the whole cow?
