walking to the grocery store?

im really starting to get into walking mainly because im in the city, the other is i hate city traffic driving. i have an aldi's about 3 1/2 miles away one way. google maps says it would take an hour to walk there. i could comfortably carry 20-30 lbs on my back. i could put my 10 month old on my back in the ergo and use his stroller for the groceries. does this sound unreasonable? i could take the bus but the system here in MN really sucks and would take just as long to get there and back plus strollers on buses

does anyone else do this? any tips and tricks? or am i crazy?

Re: walking to the grocery store?

I only walk when DH can keep the kids with him. Our grocery store is 3 houses from us, so it is not much of a walk. I do enjoy it in the summer though. DH will walk it year round as it is so close to our house.

I have an aldi's near me too, about half a mile. I've walked there for groceries while pushing DS in his stroller. We filled the little basket under the stroller. Another time, when we needed more food, I pulled him in a Radio Flyer wagon and loaded that. You could also invest a small amount of money in one of these.

There is a Stop and Shop about a mile and a half from my house, but since we have to cross very busy street, I rarely walk there. I walked home from Lowe's (in the same plaza) once with DS in a stroller because our car broke down and I never want to repeat that experience again.

We'll walk to the grocery store about a mile away, but I have to say, pushing a stroller with kiddo+ groceries is really tiring. We have some nice hills though. I do it if we're bored and I want exercise and its nice out, but it is tiring. I don't think I'd do it at that distance, though you might as well try it once and see!

If you feel comfortable walking that distance then go for it. My only concern would be groceries that need to stay cold (like milk). The time in the store plus the hour walk home is a good while to be out of the fridge. And if you bring a cooler/cold bag it will just add to the weight you have to carry.

I would do it. Buy a hot/cold bag for your cold items. Lay the stroller seat flat and off you go!
