Our girls have a raised coop and it stays dry but I know what your saying. We put sand in our run this year and it drains great.

Re: First cleaning of coop, whoa exhausting!!!
It sure does, doesn't it! City cowgirl (me) didn't know straw had stickers in it too!
So heavy gloves and some hay hooks are on my list for next time. This past time I wore garden gloves and it still came thru, ouch. I'm in the desert but I put some play sand in the bottom of our coop and I layer the straw on top of that. Never a drainage problem yet!
