When do I start using the cars seat belt alone?

I have 3 kids ages 17, 7, and 6. Things have changed so much since my 17 year old, and I just want to make sure my kids are safe. From. My reading they need to be 8 or 4 feet 9 inches. Is it safer to keep them in a booster longer or once they hit one of the requirements?

Re: When do I start using the cars seat belt alone?

My understanding is that for MOST kids, yes it is safer to keep them in a booster longer. The safety of a booster seat is based on two things: Kids size and kids behavior.

As to size, a booster seat positions the child so that the seatbelt fits them properly. So until a child gets big enough for that, a booster seat will increase safety. This will depend on the vehicle, but is usually 4'9" to 4'11".

As to behavior, the booster seat also positions the child so that they are seated properly in the seat. No turning around, wiggling, slouching, etc.
