Any marathon runners? I need training help

I started running in July and have fallen in love with the sport. I run 5K's almost every weekend and run 4-5 days during the week (one of those days I top out at 6-7miles). I'm running my first half marathon in April and I need training help. What should my runs look like per day/week? And how should they progress?

It's important to know that I have 2 small kids and often have to run after they are in bed for the night, which means running on the treadmill. I can get one outdoor run in a week if I'm lucky

Re: Any marathon runners? I need training help

This is the one I use: http://www.marathonrookie.com/half-m...-training.html

I ran my first 1/2 last April and am training for another in February. Good luck!

Eta- there are other schedules out there, but this is a really easy to follow basic one. Some will give you schedules for tempo runs to increase speed, but I was happy to just get the miles in. I am happy with my overall speed, so I'm using this one again.

I used the book "Non-Runner's Guide to Marathon Training" or something like that. I've trained for two Ms with that and will train for another one soon.

I usually run 3-4 times a week. One long run outside increasing mileage each week. One short tempo run during the week. One other short-mid run during the week. If you have to run on a TM, set it at an incline to mimic the work on the road more. If you can, make the second short run, or another one, hills.

I trained for both of my Ms with my kiddo in a jogging stroller. Made running the actual race without him feel like a piece of cake! Let me know if you need more info!!

From my iPhone, probably while BF'ing.

I like Hal higdon's schedule. I did my first two marathons with that training program.

Our kids are the same age. The only way I can train for a marathon is by getting up at five a.m. And getting my miles in by 6:30 when everybody is up.

Re: Any marathon runners? I need training help

I would so get up and run early but my husband is a night shifter and isn't home until 7:30-8am. So the girls would be alone in the house and I couldn't do that. Thank you so much for the suggestions. I will look into each and see which fits me better.

I talked to DH last night and we agreed that one day a week I should be able to get in an outdoor run. I'm going to use that as my distance day. When I work on hills on the TM should I run at an incline the entire time? and increase/decrease throughout the run?

What is the race course like? Rolling hills? A few gnarly uphills? Flat? Downhill?

Re: Any marathon runners? I need training help

I ran my first 1/2 last April. I wasn't a runner before that so I started with a beginner program.

This year I'm just kind doing my own training schedule.

T, TH - 4 miles
M,W - Cross training (I do a 60 min Body Pump class)
Sun - Long run anywhere from 6-10 miles
