DS is 16 months and for the last 4 days he has had diarrhea. He has had a bm at least once every hour while wake and now has a pretty bad diaper rash. I thought he was just teething but then today he woke up at 3:30am with a fever of 99.3 (taken under arm). I typically don't jump to treat fever and since he was acting normal I let it go. After a few hours he started to get really fussy so I gave him some tylenol. His fever has been gone since taking the tylenol but has still been pretty fussy. He also didn't want to eat anything yesterday and today has only been picking at some dry cereal.

I am just not sure if this is all from teething, a virus or possibly something else. If I call the pedi they will want to see him. There is no calling for just advice.

Would you call or wait it out longer?

How much is he urinating? Drinking? Do you know the signs of dehydration? I would be more concerned about dehydration than the fever.

Sounds like a virus, they are going around. I would make sure he is drinking plenty and not worry so much about eating. I would treat the rash, it is likely from pooping so much. I would wait to call. There is little they will or can do for him anyway other than tell you he is sick, which you already know.

I would just call the pedi and talk to the triage nurse and let her make the call about bringing him in. My guess is they will tell you to watch him and make sure he's drinking. You could give him pedialyte too, since he's having so much diarrhea. Hope he feels better soon!

Thanks for the advice. He is still drinking plenty so I am not worried about dehydration.

I feel so bad about the diaper rash. I have tried coconut oil, CJ's, Pinxsav, Destin and butt paste. Nothing seems to be helping.

I would call. No harm in him being seen, right?

Corn starch powder will help. You want to dry it out.

I would also start giving him some probiotics to help heal his gut.

I wouldn't call. I would keep him hydrated, give probiotics (MegaFood.com "Kids n' Megaflora). No corn syrup. Only water with or without 1/4 strength Electro Mix to drink.

Re: To call the pedi or not

If the diaper rash is not going away, and he's had diahrreah... the stomach virus might have triggered an over-growth of yeast and the diaper rash might be a yeast rash.

Treat with coconut oil mixed with a bit of tea tree oil, or call the pediatrician and ask for a prescription for Nystatin. Or, you can go to the store and by Lotramin and put on the booty.

As long as he's staying hydrated and the fever is staying down.. just let it run it's course. If he starts to be dehydrated, acting very lethargic or the fever spikes or won't go down with Tylenol/Ibuprofen, then take him to the ER.

You could call the pediatrician's office and speak to the nurse if it will make you feel better.

Above all else.. trust your mommy instincts. God gave them to you for a reason. If you think he needs to go in, take him in. *hugs* I have NEVER been wrong when my instincts told me to take my LO's to the doctor.

Good luck. Hope he feels better soon.

Oh, and I'd also get him on a pro-biotic immediately.
God bless!
