Re: A just turned 3YO is perfectly safe FF'ing...right?

Yes, RF is always safer. But it's not going to be possible to RF them forever.
I think 3yrs is an awesome length of time RF and would have no problems turning them then.
FTR, Levi will be turned FF in the spring, when Hiccup comes. He will be just about 3yrs old.

Haha he sounds huge to me. My oldest dd is exact same age and same carseat but she is only 25lbs and 32inches. Lol. She is still rf obviously.

I would absolutely not buy a $500 seat to rear-face a 3 year old. Three is my RF min. It's my DH's RF max, so our kids pretty much turn on their birthdays (which is tomorrow for DD). I'm fine with it. A few years ago, you would have no choice but to turn because 35lbs was the highest RF limit there was.

Re: A just turned 3YO is perfectly safe FF'ing...right?

My 5 year old DD is rear facing in my vehicle at 39 pounds, and my DS is 3 years old, and rear facing at 35 pounds. They are both in Radian R120s in my car. In my husband's vehicle, we recently switched them both forward facing in Boulevards, BUT the ONLY reason they are allowed to forward face in there, is because it is only used to drive them around base, where the speed limit does not exceed 15 mph (we live on a really tiny base, for those wondering, lol). If my husband plans on taking them off base, he takes them in my car, and I use his car or our motorcycle.

And I do not know anybody who extended rear faces in our city, but I've never been one to succumb to peer pressure ; )
