No real contribution here. I'm just picturing South Park's ookie mouth game when I read this thread.

I called Walgreen's for my MIL when she was visiting as the shingles vax isn't available where she's from, and the total cost without insurance was $200-some, NOT thousands.

I'm still on the fence about it.

Are we saying that kids who are vaccinated for CP can still get shingles?

Yes they can still get shingles. Last study I heard about said that they thought the occurence should be a bit lower (some experts even say a good amount lower), but it will still be possible.

you only get shingles if you have had CP...it spurs up from the live virus in you

This is what I had thought. It's also why I am leaning towards doing the CP vaccine. My sister, SIL, and DH have all gotten shingles when perfectly healthy. I am the only one of our crew that hasn't. If CP vaccine = no CP = no shingles, I am likely in.

For this same reason.

I ask because I never had them, and am pretty happy about that because I don't have to worry about Shingles, which I hear is awful, so I was just curious why some people seek it out to expose their kids.
I could be wrong but I think the vaccine leaves you more likely to get shingles than if you had the actuall illness. The vaccine is also not permanant. You need to keep getting booster shots. Typically but not always the illness leaves you with a more permanant immunity.

Re: s/o Why do you want your kids to have CP

I have been told you can get shingles from having the vaccine as well

Both my boys have had cp naturally, one at at 3 yrs old and one at 3 months old. The 3 month old only got about 3 spots, 3 yr old got a decent case of it. Since then, the one who got 3 spots only at 3 months, has had shingles at about 3 1/2. Not a bad case and didn't bother him much. I was told if young kids get it it's typically not as bad as older kids or adults.

The chickenpox vaccine is one recommended preventative measure against shingles, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, it is still possible to develop the condition even after being vaccinated.

I asked my daughter's ped why they even came out with a chickenpox vaccine. She said that chickenpox started coming attached with a flesh-eating strep. Also, now that community-acquired MRSA is so prevalent, escaping so many open body sores is a good idea.
