Can I wash this?

Last year, I stupidly bought DS a coat without checking the care label.. It says dry-clean only.

I haven't washed it since.... Quite frankly, I can't afford to take it to the cleaners everytime he gets it dirty. Luckily last year it wasn't cold enough to need it, and it has only been used since December, but I'm pretty sure its nasty. And if necessary, I'll suck it up and pay for it to be dry-cleaned, but I'd definitely rather not.. We spend enough on dry-cleaning with DH military uniforms!

Anyway. This is the label:
Shell: 57% polyester, 40% wool, 3% other fiber
lining (hood/top): 100% cotton
Lining (sleeve/bottom): 100% polyester
filling: 100% polyester.

The lining doesn't come out, which is what I kept reading to do online. I've never had anything wool, so I'm not sure how it will be affected.. I was thinking maybe I could wash it on my gentle cycle in cold/cold with an extra rinse, then hang to dry..

Any advice?

Re: Can I wash this?

It is likely dry clean only because of the wool content. Can you hand wash it?

Re: Can I wash this?

I have washed TONS of stuff - even suits - that are "dry clean only" ....

I wash it on a cold cycle, by itself, and then hang it to dry (or lay it flat if I worry the material will warp from being hung).

I've only had a handful of things get screwed up.

For your coat, the biggest issue that I can think of would be the polyester shrinking from heat. So washing on cold and then line drying or flat drying would be your best bet. Don't even use the dryer, b/c it might not be cool enough and could warp it.

Oh, true, and the wool.... didn't catch that.

Handwash on cold, then dry if possible. Handwash won't get as thorough as a washing machine cycle though...

.....i can but I don't want to. LOL. I guess as a last resort I will, but I never feel its clean enough and it takes ages. LOL. All of my "handwash only" goes into the washer because I'm crazy like that. LOL

If it's a choice between throwing it away and trying the washer - try the washer. Then throw it away if it gets ruined.

I would wash it on gentle and hang dry.

And for what its worth, I have washed many of my DH's military uniforms that are "dry clean only". I wash them on gentle with a small amount of detergant and hang dry. We've never had any issues!

Re: Can I wash this?

i machine wash my wool coat on cold in the handwash/delicate cycle and lay it to dry... I didnt used to, but once I had ds, I figured if I could machine wash wool covers, my coat ought to be fine too.

I dont do it a lot, but my coat doesnt get as dirty as a kids would either. I'd aim for spot cleaning as much as possible, wash it rarely, and maybe get it cleaned once a season.

Re: Can I wash this?

Does your washer have a "hand wash" cycle? I would do that on mine.

That being said I have several dress coats of my own that I'm too chicken to wash and too cheap to dry clean!!
