Claire's birth story...

Birth Story.

Saw midwife May 4th - 4 cm and 100% effaced - told I was going to have the baby "that night"
Saw midwife May 10th - 5 cm 100 % effaced and still pregnant - told baby would come anytime
Night of May 10th called the midwife on call (the senior midwife who I hadn't seen in a few weeks) because I felt "damp" - she thought is was nothing to worry about - told her about my last 2 visits and she remembered that I lived over 30 minutes from the hospital. She was very concerned about me having the baby in the car and asked me to meet her at the hospital the next day to break my water - she said I'd have the baby really quick.

Really stressed about letting her do that or not...

May 11th - 3pm - get to the hospital -Doula got their before midwife. Craig, Doula and I sat around and talked about Africa - it was fun - feeling pretty good. Meet the midwife - she says I'm 7cm and 100% effaced and that I'll have the baby within 1 hour of breaking my water - I was very skeptical.

Asked for some time to make phone calls and that sort of thing. Got my bloodwork done - strip done - all that stuff - while not in labor at all.
Was second guessing "getting induced" till the bitter end...

5 pm - She broke my water

5:15 after walking with Craig had first "real" contraction
5:25 ish - After having a few hard contractions on birthing ball - got in birthing tub. Doula had tried to get me to go in the tub after the first bad one - but I thought they where going to get worse and wanted to "save" the tub for the bad stuff. That last bad contraction was me getting to 10 cm.
Everything stopped for about 5 minutes - I thought tub had stalled out labor
5:30 ish - worried I would have BM in tub - asked to go to bathroom - Now realize this was the start of pushing contraction - they hurt worse than anything else to me.
5:35ish - Had some hard contraction in bathroom - got really scared of pain - asked for midwife to come check me
5:45ish - Midwife made me get back in tub. When she came in and saw me on the toilet she told me - you are having the baby - you can have it on the bed or you can have in the tub - but you can't have it on the toilet. She checked me when I got back in the tub- The babies head was almost on the premium - Had one REALLY bad contraction and the midwifes positioned me leaning on the edge of the tub - did a back pressure thing and had me a low noise threw the contraction - helped a ton.
Had nice 3 or 4 minute breaks between contractions
6 ish - Figured out how to push - scared by feeling of baby in birth canal. Wanted to change positions and told midwife "this position is working for me" and she says "this is a good position" - stayed where I was.
6:10 - Pushed really head (harder than the mw wanted) I screamed in pain and told Midwife it hurt - she told me I didn't have to push so much - but before she could finish the sentence - she goes "nevermind- the head is out" - Baby popped out - Leaned me back and delivered the body - all that really hurt - got a second degree tear - it was just sooo quick.

Got to hold the baby on my chest and kind of float in the tub with her for a while - it was great.

All in all - much nicer than my epidural birth. Recovery has been awesome.

Claire is a real sweet baby - very sleepy - had jaundice - but cute and sweet.

Re: Claire's birth story...

I really enjoyed your story! 7 cm dilated and not in labor sounds really unique to me. Your body works really well.
