That's not a gift them, it's a stick to beat you with. Run away and run away far.

Perhaps they see they treated you poorly and would like to make amends? You are using harsh words to characterize a situation you aren't in. They offered it to your husband. Perhaps it's his inheritance. After everything you went through, as long as they don't demand a key at closing, why not let him take the help.

Stand on your own two feet and do it without them. We have had a similar situation and we have totally declined any financial help from my ILs because my MIL hangs everything over your head even though they have bent over backwards to help their oldest son out of everything possible and now have him living rent free for a year in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in town. It is disgusting. He has no job, a felony, and can't/wont get it together. He hasn't had a job in over two years. Anyway, we are fine, much better in fact, for turning down the help when it was offered. We also remind her often that if having our kids is an inconvenience that we can have someone else take them easily and she doesn't have to. That just makes her mad, but we don't want to think she is "saving us" by watching the kids.

I don't think I could take that kind of money from my ILs or my parents, and I get along with them. I definitely wouldn't take it from people I don't even like. I'd always feel like I owed them. You'll be so much happier if you do it yourself, even if it does take a little longer.

I would not take the money. I know it's difficult to pass up, but it's not worth it.

It sounds like they would use it to hold over your head.
