Re: cause of homemade diapers wicking through threading?
How close together are your stitches? I try to make sure my stitches are as wide as possible.
Let us know how your next one comes out!

Re: cause of homemade diapers wicking through threading?
I've made quite a few, and they really need to be on HIGH heat to reseal the PUL. Just throwing them in for a tumble dry will not reseal PUL completely. 20 minutes or so on high should do the trick.

Re: cause of homemade diapers wicking through threading?
unfortunately it doesn't seem to have helped to do the high heat drying.
![]() I also tried them during 'lighter' peeing times of the day hah... didn't help either. My thread is the c&c 'polyester coated polyester'. needle too big? thread not right? I can't think what else I could be doing wrong?? ... MAYBE suedecloth is not enough material on it's own? I mean, where it's stitched, it's just suedecloth and then the pul. Nothing absorbing near the leg edges in other words. The insert is in the center and theres a 1" space from where it is, to the sides, that has nothing but sc and pul. Perhaps this is the issue? |

Re: cause of homemade diapers wicking through threading?
Have you tried no casting with the elastic zig-zagged, yet?

Re: cause of homemade diapers wicking through threading?
I'm wondering if it's just that the inserts aren't absorbing fast enough, so the liquid is getting to the seams and just going through the first "weak" spot it finds...since it sounds like your sewing methods and materials sound okay. A smaller needle would probably help, but I have used 14's without problems before.

I agree, it seems like something about your inserts. What fabric/ layers are you using? How old is your baby?
Could it be that your PUL is cotton not poly? |

Re: cause of homemade diapers wicking through threading?
ok thanks for the response. I am going to add some hemp doublers and see how it goes. It's strange because I sewed in used inserts that worked fine by themselves in my pocket diapers. So I'm confused why they would perform less well, you know?
My pul is just standard pul bought at diaper supply sites (and not cotton coated pul). I DID try a rolled legging though last weekend actually! It doesn't quite roll in without a little help (probably b/c I didn't make the inner fabric less wide to help pull it in). But it does not seem to have leaking issues obviously without the thread issue.
