new car seat guideline in 2014?

If I'm understanding correctly seat plus kid should be under 65lbs to use the lower latch anchors in place of a seatbelt.

That's not true across the board, but for many vehicles, it is, even retroactively. For instance, Ford has said to follow the old rules (48lb lower anchor limit, child weight only) for all 2013 and older vehicles. The new rules will only apply to 2014 and newer.

I think these new rules are stupid and setting us back. LATCH is supposed to make things easier, and car seat weight limits are getting higher as parents are trying to harness their kids longer. So, for instance, a Foonf weighs 38.6lbs. With these new rules, you could only LATCH a Foonf with a child weighing 26lbs or less. You can't even assume you're okay as long as you rear-face!

It's a mess. Basically, the way I understand it... they're saying that you should assume a 65 pound weight limit on lower LATCH anchors, where the weight includes the weight of the car seat AND the weight of the child, added together. So I think car seats are going to be required to be labeled with their weight so you can subtract and find out how much your child can weigh and still be under the 65#.

However, different car manufacturers are using different LATCH rules.

Information here and here.

So would the easiest way to solve this issue is look up the LATCH weight limits for your specific year, make and model of vehicle then weigh your car seat? Then once the limit is maxed out, switch to securing it with a seat belt?

How confusing

I think its a huge annoyance that I'm not thrilled to see, but I'm not going to search out loopholes. Why can't car companies say, " it can hold up to "x" amount of pounds the end. "

I don't want to stop using lower latches any sooner than I have too.

I think thats the problem. most manufacturers have been saying only the weight of the child and disregarding the 30lb seats most are lugging around.

It is a giant mess. I'm not looking forward to the next check event where techs are just figuring this stuff out. I am working what is supposed to be a big event on Friday and I am envisioning chaos. Our coalition is giving out LATCH Manuals to the techs that participate, I hope they read them thoroughly.

My personal plan of action with this is to use the seat belt as much as possible so you don't have to worry about weight limits.

Well, they kind of are, but are going with a stupidly low number that basically lowers the kid weight limit for most vehicles. Yesterday, it was supposedly safe to LATCH a 48lb kid in a 30lb car seat in a Chrysler vehicle. Today, you can only LATCH that same kid in the same seat to 35lbs.

This is the most frustrating part; yesterday it was perfectly safe, but now it's not? I'm not feeling a lot of confidence in any of them right now.

Why does the article say that it's only for kids 3 and up?
