Re: What age did you start cereal and solids?
We never did cereal. DD1 started solids about 8 months, and DD2 about 6 months. We waited until they showed an interest but DD1 wasn't really interested in solids until after she turned a year.

Re: What age did you start cereal and solids?
We're just starting with foods at 6 months old. Our pediatrician said new studies have shown that waiting to introduce allergen foods (like wheat, nuts, etc) until babies are older doesn't stop them from having allergies. This seemed to contradict everything I'd read previously. We chose to stick with oatmeal and some experimental fruits & veggies. At this stage, I really feel like he is just getting used to tastes and textures more than actually eating anything for nutritional value.

8 mo with one dd and 9 mo with the other. We didn't do cereal- avocados, bananas, and sweet potatoes were our first foods.

Re: What age did you start cereal and solids?
My doc said the same thing. 4 months for fruit and cereal no veggies. He also told me to limit my dairy products. My baby does show an interest in food and eats very well. I have been concerned with her bm and im thinking her little body might not be just ready yet.
She was only 6lbs 1oz at birth and at her 4 month checkup she was 10lbs 15oz. The doc said she was a little underweight and that he wasn't concerned. She is breastfed so idk. Im just going with the flow.

Solids are only for introduction the first year of life. Breastmilk or formula is the main source of nutrition. Babies should not be given food until at least 6 months as they are not developmentally ready for food.
We never did rice cereal or mushy puréed food. They were at least 8 months old. When they could do the following then I steamed fruit and veggies and put it in the tray so they could be in charge of their own eating. They had to be able to: Sit up unassisted (no propping) Loose tongue thrust reflex (most babies are over 6 months)......if their instinct is to push food out then they are not ready for food. Actually be interested in wanting to eat. Sure babies grab everything and want to put everything in their mouths, not necessarily just food. Pick up foods and put it in their mouths themselves. There are more, but dd3's ballet class is letting out.

Re: What age did you start cereal and solids?
My daughter is 4.5 months and she is able to sit up. We started giving her vegtables as she was always making a grab for the food on my plate or in my hand. She also sleeps much better during the night now.
I think my son started eating around the same time and has no allergies. |

I waited until 9mo with all three of mine. My Dr & friend said it is best to wait until they demand it, so rather then giving them food when the show "interest", we wait until they are upset when you won't give it to them. It made more sense to me as a mother, since young children are very grabby and will reach for & eat anything in sight, food or not. This way I knew that I wasn't misunderstanding exploration with feeding cues. I've heard many Dr's and nutritionists say Food before 1 is just for fun....they really don't need anything besides breastmilk to thrive until a year.
