www.wholesomebaby.com & www.baby-led.com/ are some good sites to check out.

Most likely nursing and typing. Please pardon any mistakes.
Same here!

DD1 started on avocado at around 8 months. I'd read that the cereal has no nutritional value and just fills up their tummies, crowding out room for breastmilk or formula, which is what they really need to grow. So that's why I decided to skip cereal altogether.

Good discussion here!

Re: What age did you start cereal and solids?

We started solids around 6 months. We don't give rice cereal. There is no nutritional value. We gave it to her for about a month (daycare's recommendation) and she didn't poop for 2 weeks. Never again.

We started with pureed green beans mixed with apple sauce. We made our own babyfood. It was so easy and cheap. Plus, I know exactly what my baby is eating. We started letting her feed herself with solid food as soon as she was able to use the pincer grip, so soon after starting purees.

Now, she eats some purees but mostly finger food. She eats everything that we eat.

we never did cereal. we officially started baby led weaning at 6 months, but he had a few things sneaked to him before that, lol. he was a peanut too, maybe 15lbs or so at 6 months, he was barely 20 at a year

Re: What age did you start cereal and solids?

My baby hit 6 months just a bit ago and we haven't done anything except let her lick an apple wedge. I don't plan on cereals or even purees, I'll wait until she loses her thrust/gag reflex and go straight to soft, bite size pieces of fruits and veggies. It'll probebly be around 8 - 9 months. My understanding about common allergens (wheat, nut, dairy) and young babies isn't that it causes the allergy but rather that if there is an allergtic reaction, it will be much more threatening and problematic. In my two older DDs, I didn't have a problem starting with common-allergen foods early because there is no history of fod allergies anywhere in our families. Very unlikely that one would pop up. But in families where allergies are much more common, waiting as long as possible is better because IF the baby reacts, he is bigger and stronger and more likely to survive it.

Re: What age did you start cereal and solids?

trust your mama instinct & wait until BABY is ready! you know your babys readyness signs better than anyone, so dont let any person or chart be your guide- MAMA KNOWS BEST! besides, if you are breastfeeding, thats all they need anywAy. breastmilk is the PERFECT food!

also, for A slightly different aproach to introducing solids where pureed babyfood is skipped altogether, Google: "infant led weaning to solids"

We did 10 days shy of 6 months. He couldn't sit up yet (and wouldn't until 7 months), but he grabbed for things off my plate and mimicked chewing motions with his mouth. At five months I tried to introduce the sippy and started putting him in his high chair at the table for breakfast and dinner. We are at 8 months 10 days now and he loves food but doesn't care for water. He is just now figuring out the bottle/sippy (he only had the breast before). He eats everything we eat except for peanut butter and honey.
