I tried doing this by using a zigzag stitch over the edges (no serger). It did work but the edges that I sewed are wavy (they don't lay flat). Any tips on how to prevent this?

hmmmm I might straight stitch along the cut edges about a quarter inch in to create a seam allowance, then zig zag within the seam allowance? The cut is on the bias so it will get a bit wavy but the straight stitch might help!

I made tiny inserts out of cut up organic flips for bum genius newborn AIO -- because babies tend to pee through them, and I was trying to make more absorbent. I very carefully cut a slit in the fleece stay dry fabric, and sewed the mini flip insert to it like a tongue (think the simplex) so you could insert it under the stay dry to add absorbancy without a lot of bulk, and pull out the tongue to wash/dry. They were with a tester mom so I don't yet know how they did, but she should be back from maternity leave soon, and I'll find out.
