Tell me about coconut oil

I know there are many uses for coconut oil. I am wondering what you mamas use it for the most. Also what is the best type to buy - virgin, refined, etc. Do you have a brand you like the best? Where is the best place to purchase it? Any other things that would be good to know? Thanks!

I use it on all of my children head to toe. Great leave-in for curly haired kiddos and on their skin. Diaper area for the baby, baking in place of butter.

Re: Tell me about coconut oil

buy expeller pressed, organic. costco has a huge one for a decent price if you have a membership or know someone who does...trader joes has a jar for i think $5.50 or something along those lines. my favorite brand for taste is Barleans, but for my skin, hair, etc i am not as picky, and like to pay less.

i use it for everything the above poster said (i also have some curly haired kids and curly haired me) , plus i give it to my dog, i take a couple tablespoons daily for the omega 3s, rub it on my face at night, cook certain dishes in it..add it to brown basmati rice for flavor...love it.

We keep one in the bedroom, one in the kitchen, and one in the bathroom.

The one in the kitchen we cook with, put in Smoothies and hot tea/coffee.

The one in the bathroom we use for excema, diaper rash, dry knees an elbows, I use it as a leave in conditioner, and I use it instead of soap to wipe up my girly bits in between showering.

The one in the bedroom is strictly for mommy/daddy time.

I love coconut oil........we also use it for everything, body lotion, chapped lip, bum cream, cooking, etc. We used cold pressed, organic..........I just got a big one at Costco for a decent price ($16.99....I'm in Canada though so things are more expensive here....it's a huge tub though). We also have a container in the kitchen and a couple upstairs (one in my girls bathroom and one in mine).

You definitely want to get one that's not refined. I got one that was so refined that it didn't smell or taste like coconut! I use it all over my LO. I add it to his diaper wipes spray soap concentrate that I made, in his curly hair, all over his skin and as a diaper rash ointment. I love it when he smells like a little coconut drop.

Virgin CO has a slight coconut taste and smell. Expeller pressed is tasteless. I get Nutiva brand virgin organic. They have it at Costco (best price around!) or I get it from Nutiva.com also, because I literally buy it by the gallon. We use it for everything. Cooking, frying, baking, in smoothies/tea, on toast... I use it to wash my face, and as a moisturizer. It's great on baby bums as diaper cream. There's lots of good info about CO at www.tropicaltraditions.com. It's good stuff!
