Snaps on knitted romper?

Is it possible to put snaps on a knitted garment? Can a person put snaps on something without a snap press?

I want to knit my baby a romper for sleeping. One of the things that's been holding me back are buttons. She is a button chewer.

I figured that if I made a top down raglan (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...esie-or-romper) she wouldn't have as much access to those yummy plastic morsels. However, I'd still be worried that a button would fall off the leg or that she would discover the exciting challenge of chewing one off her leg.

Re: Snaps on knitted romper?

I put snaps on the legs of one of my daughters rompers and it worked really well. I lined the button band with fleece so the snaps wouldnt pull out and then just used my snap press but I know you can get snap pliers at Joanns etc.

I dont know if I have any pics of the button band on the rav project page...eta I dont have any pics but if you want some to see how mine was done just pm me

I'd love to see a photo but I don't want to bother you. I know it's a pain taking pictures with little ones around.

I need to go to JoAnn's soon. I'll check out the pliers. I should mention that, although I am a fairly competent knitter, I am not crafty.

There are little sew-on snaps that wouldn't require a press:

Re: Snaps on knitted romper?

I have made rompers and onesies with snaps.
I used smaller needles and linen stitch for the button band. It makes a fairly dense fabric and I didn't need to reinforce the area to put snaps. I used snap pliers to put the snaps.
I don't have pics of the button band. I'll see if I can take some.

Awesome!
ETA: I really like the idea of a LS button band. It probably wouldn't get as stretched out.

Re: Snaps on knitted romper?

Okay, so I ended up making this romper for DD

I asked about snaps at JoAnn's and was not impressed with their customer service... so I used buttons. Problem is they keep popping out. I bought bigger buttons and those pop out too.

I'd really like to make a few more rompers for next fall as well as some summer onesies. Should I invest in a snap press? DD is almost 2 (and she is our last) so our diapering days are numbered. Will buttons stay put on a onesie or will they pop out too?

I think you'd be fine with snap pliers... You can get them at JoAnn's and I hear they're the same as the kam pliers. Plus they have 40% off coupons often so with that they'd be cheap.

I don't recommend the babyville snaps though. Some people have had good experiences with them but I find them far inferior to the kam snaps.

Re: Snaps on knitted romper?

I only have 2 rompers and one has crotch snaps and the other has them down the front and the one down the front stays closed the crotch one doesn't... I like the idea of reinforcing it with fleece... I think that's that I'll do if I ever want to use snaps or even if I do buttons. I think all the movement that area gets makes it hard on hand knitting.
