Birth is painful. It's also beautiful and amazing, so if you want an epi so that you can enjoy the beauty of birth, go for it.

I had an epi with both kids, and my second birth was awesome. DD basically just slid out. I pushed once, then breathed through the contractions, and there she was. The doctor said that's common with second epi births, because mama knows what to do.

I was in labor for 45 with nothing but petocin. It was horrible. I was shaking so bad from the pain they had to hold me down to give me an epi. I swear, that relief, was like a Godsend.

I could have done natural, but why? I remember everything about labor, I could finally focus on pushing, and I wasn't crying from the pain. I got to have a calm birth that I can only pray for again.

When I first met my OB he made sure I knew that there were absolutely no effects on the baby, that it didn't make me a stronger woman for going natural, and that I was crazy if I wanted to do natural just for the chance to say I did.

I felt no shame and my son's birth was just as beautiful as anyone who delivered naturally. Go with the flow, if you don't need it, that's a cheaper bill. If you do, live it up!

You can't.

For me.. My water births were as much for me as for baby. As much for my body as for my mind. You gotta want it, IMO. And trust me... I'd rather get an epi too. Birth scares me. And it's painful!!! But once I am on the other side I feel like shera! Lol

As long as you're informed of the pros and cons, that's all that matters. Have the birth YOU want.

Uhm.... There are effects on the baby and risks to the whole labor process... and its not some kind of feminist machismo... women who choose a natural birth do it for their own reasons most of which do not involve bragging rights.

I'm going into this one with an open mind. If it gets to bad, or the labor is too long I might ask for an epi but I'm hopeful to go without pain medication again and I'm not crazy nor am I doing it just for the chance to say I did.

Umm, I didn't say you were? I just said what my OB told me. But i agree, I think it's crazy to go natural simply for bragging rights.

However, I disagree with the effects thing. My Dr. explained it to me and I trust him more than any other doctor out there. Actually, I drove 5 hrs just to go to him.

Either way, this isn't a place for debate on it. I was just saying what he told me, and I think it fits here.

Wait! Hold the phone.

So, not only did you have this amazing specialists from 2 states away that was able to perform this unheard of, $4K life saving and completely painless circumcision that your son was able to sleep through entirely......

but you also had an OBGYN that was able to defy all medical facts and guarantee you a risk free epidural!? Dang. No wonder you drove 5hrs for his care. An OBGYN and a medical risk defying anesthesiologist all in one!

No. My OB and specialist were two different people. But thanks for stalking me out. You're cool like that aren't you.

I never assumed the specialist who did your sons unheard of circumcision was also your risk defying OB that guaranteed you a risk free epidural. I said your OB that you drove 5hrs to see must have also been an anesthesiologist being as OB's don't do epidurals.

Oh, and I frequent the pregnancy board, hence the majority of my posts and my response to this thread when it was first started. I like to follow threads that I've replied to. So, no stalking necessary. I'm just mighty impressed by all these super docs and all their amazing procedures you have access to.. that's all! A risk free epidural done by an OBGYN... something trained anesthesiologists can't even guarantee. And then the unheard of, completely painless circumcision procedure where your son was injected into his abdominal/hip/pelvic area to feel no sensation and was able to sleep peacefully through the entire thing and not suffer any discomfort afterwards. Who WOULDN'T be impressed!?

Psh heck no! I'm pretty crunchy normally but I had no interest in going without an epi.
