Accuracy of Ultrasound Dating?

So, I went in for my first ultrasound today (13 weeks) and they dated the pregnancy at 14 weeks. They moved my due date from August 6 to July 30, so I'm wondering how accurate they are in your experience?

I just don't understand how I could be a whole week further along...

With my first baby, at my 9 week dating ultrasound, they gave me an EDD 2 days before the date I had based on my LMP and he was born 2 days before that.

earlier ones are the better ones for more accurate dates. I had one with my first as my original doc didn't catch I was pregnant til 20 weeks then I switched to ob as I was that far along. We dated and I was 2 days after the edd the ob gave me.

Did you mark the days you DTD or anything? You can ovulate at pretty much any time outside your period, but if you only DTD a couple times then its gotta be within a window of that...
But yeah, early on, the growth is pretty standard and can be measured, once you get further along physical growth widely varies.

earlier u/s are much better for dating.

many things can factor into being off. One tiny measurement difference can be huge. Or you just grow big babies.

I think that between 7-10 weeks they are the most accurate (even during that time frame they can be 5 days off though). At 13-14 weeks I bet its just the measurement that's off, and not really that you're a week further ahead.

Early u/s are more accurate, however it's just measurememnts based on "average" sized babies. They can be a week off either way.

Re: Accuracy of Ultrasound Dating?

I asked my cousin who is an US tech. She said most accurate is between 6 to 8 weeks. It can be off by as much as 5 to 7 days. I know when I had my scans the 7 week was to the day accurate (according to charting and dtd) by the time I was 12 weeks baby was measuring a whole 10 days larger and continue to measure larger until back on track at 19 weeks. I wouldn't worry and would probably stick with the first due date if you were charting or tracking in any way?

Re: Accuracy of Ultrasound Dating?

The problem with early ultrasounds is not everyone wasnts a TransVag done - i REFUSE!! We are doing dating this week, I should be 12 w 1 d according to me though they think I am 14 w 3 d - I ovulate late!

OP - Personally, I would not care if they moved the date out one week - at least it is not a week closer! I do not want to be induced because the doctors *think* the baby is past due when in reality the lo is not even ready

That's my fear too! I have one next Friday, and I will be almost 15 weeks. I'm afraid this is late and they are going to adjust my dd. I also have big babies. I do not want an induction.
