Introducing oatmeal?

I'm trying to stay away from processed foods for my baby as much as possible. I was reading somewhere that the Gerber rice cereal was a processed food. Is the oatmeal as well? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but it's just because I don't know much about this stuff or how these companies make the food. If it is processed, how do you introduce oatmeal that is not?

I soak gluten free oats overnight with a little apple cider vinegar to make it more digestible, then cook it the next day and just serve like that. It gets pretty mushy but you could puree if you wanted it thinner.

Re: Introducing oatmeal?

personally i never remember to soak over night so i just blend some oats in my coffee grinder.

2 T ground oats (old fashioned)
5 T boiling water

then i microwave it for a minute or it. it tells me its done by the way it looks. the boiling water really helps so it doesnt "burn" in the micro.
i guess its depends on how well lo digests and what your lo's tolerances look like.

Earth's Best also makes baby oatmeal. It's just oats ground very fine. They sell it at Target.

Re: Introducing oatmeal?

We got some of the Earth's Best oatmeal and plan on using that instead of rice. we've been concerned about the arsenic they've been finding in rice.

Re: Introducing oatmeal?

Part of my issue is just the cost of "baby oatmeal" when I can get regular rolled oats from the bulk food section of the grocery store.
I ground some rolled oats in my mini food processor - cooked them maybe once or twice for DD but she was pretty cool with the "adult" version - so I never again bothered to make "baby food."

Anything from gerber is pretty processed. Look at fooducate . Awesome app. I actually dont do cereal or grains until a year . Then we do homemade oatmeal. I do homemade fruits and veggies that I puree . what if you just used your food processor to make the regular oats smaller? I but steele cut organic oats here.

Re: Introducing oatmeal?

We do the Earth's Best oatmeal too... I like the idea of the regular rolled oats too though, I think my daughter might like that!
