Season 1 (of the new series) starts with the ninth doctor. A lot of people say that they don't like the first episode of the first season, but I loved it. We just finished season 5 and have watched 3 different doctors now. The ninth doctor is my favorite. Just do yourselves a favor and watch a few episodes before you decide whether or not you like it

Sometimes the doctor has to regenerate, when he's about to die, and he changes his appearance when he does (hence a different actor)

The Doctor regenerates (changes actors) after some time. I don't want to give any more spoilers than that. Start with Doctor Who Series 1 from 2005...great place to get into it.

Seasons 1-6 are streaming on Netflix It's a great show! A little crazy, just watch a few episodes and see if you get into it. I love it! I'd just start at the beginning if I were you. And there's a lot you figure out as it goes, so just be patient. Or watch a whole season in a couple days like me

start from the beginning and don't be discouraged when there are some bad episodes

Definitely start at the beginning of the new series. Even my DS loves the show.

Oh, yeah. My kids ALL love it. Any time we ask my 2-year old (who still doesn't talk much at all) what he wants to watch he says either "Doc HOOOO!" or "D Nine" (for Star Trek Deep Space Nine)

This is where I started and it was a great place to jump in. I found myself addicted almost immediately and got very attached to the companions.

It is like James Bond. Same person (like creature) but different people portray them. However unlike Bond, the Doctor maintains some of the same characteristics of each of his prior selves and has the memory of prior selves.
