free audiobooks

anyone know of a reputable site for downloading free audiobooks? Like the sites where you can check out ebooks. I found booksshouldbefree .com but I'm not wanting to download something from a site that I know nothing about. I found a couple of classics that I'd like to download to listen to.

I'm not sure about a place to download them, but I do know that our library has an AWESOME audio book section. Maybe that is an option?

I think our library has books on TAPE. Who has a tape player anymore? LOL They actually still have VHS tapes too. I live in a small town and we're not quite up with the times yet. I'll have to check out the library in the next big town over and see.

We do. LOL Our car does as well. We love to listen to audio books when we take road trips and most of our older ones that we have bought are on tape and we still listen to them. DS has heard Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz and The Lincoln Lawyer about a million times b/c he likes to listen to them in his room.

Re: free audiobooks

I would ask at your library if they lend electronic audiobooks.

Librivox.com has user-recorded audiobooks of books in the public domain. I can't imagine that there are any websites that legally allow the free download of popular books not in the public domain. I get all my audiobooks either through my audible.com subscription, or through my local library's Overdrive account.

Re: free audiobooks

Does your library have an E-book site? Most libraries these days do. Here in TN, there is a statewide site that a bunch of the smaller libraries all have together, then the bigger cities like Nashville and Memphis each have their own e-book site. Anyone with a library card for a participating library has access to all the e-books and audiobooks on the site.

Re: free audiobooks

I have used librivox.com for an old classic once. Do you have an iPhone/iPod/iPad? I found a free app called Free Books that has tons of ebooks but there is a $3.99 upgrade on the app that will unlock almost 5 thousand audiobooks with unlimited downloads. The icon is a stack of books.

Otherwise, I have been using my library for audiobooks. If I don't have time to run in and pick some out, I just use Overdrive and download them.

I was talking about older classics (Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice) I'm not talking about new books. I know those won't be free.

I just looked and my library does do OverDrive. I just found the site and I'm browsing books now. Thanks ladies!
