Talk me into it (or out of it?)

I've got a 4mo old at home, and we love CDing, but I hate microfiber. I was looking at the cost of replacing our inserts with bamboo, and it is expensive!! I'm interested in making my own, but here's the catch - I don't own a sewing machine. I do know how to sew - before baby, I used to make stuff for the house on a friend's machine - but she's moved out of town and now I have no sewing machine access.

Is it worth buying a sewing machine? I don't know if I'll ever be crafty enough to sew an entire diaper, or clothes, so I'm really not sure its worth it. But I do enjoy a good crafty project...

On a related note, any recommendations for a decent machine on the more inexpensive size in case I decide to take the plunge?

I have a low end singer that I like, but I'm no expert!

Have you thought of stuffing with flannel receiving blankets? You wouldn't need to sew then... although it is a fun, addicting hobby....

Do it! I'm dying to buy my own sewing machine even though I haven't touched one since middle school home ec class :-)

And you think spending $150+ on a machine, thread, needles and then the cost of materials(about $12 a yard for bamboo fleece) is going to be less money than buying. A machine that you don't think you will fully use?

If you only want to make inserts or doubler a serger would be a better fit.

I currently own 5 machines, 2 I plan on selling and will likely pick up one more but I sew.

You can get the cheap brother machine from walmart. It's only like $70, I've had mine for five years and put it through tons of abuse and it still does well.

As far as if it would be worth it to you....only you can decide.

You could also get cotton knit material and use it for flats....just cut out squares--the edges won't fray. Or you could get flour sack towels. Or prefolds...

Another idea I would suggest is asking friends and family if they have an old sewing machine that they're not using. You'd probably be surprised how many people own one but NEVER use it. They might give it to you, or sell it to you cheap. You could also check at thrift stores for a used one.

Personally, I'd buy these before buying a machine just to make inserts.

I'd recommend Imagine bamboo prefolds or flats. A machine and materials is a big investment that may or may not work out.

I LOVE sewing, and wouldn't for a second pass up buying another machine. That said, a sewing machine is an investment. You aren't going to save any money making your own inserts if you have to buy a sewing machine.

I personally am in love with flats. A few dozen flats from greenmountaindiapers.com would cover you and you wouldn't have to sew anything.

I feel like sewing to save money doesn't usually happen. Fabric is expensive!! Plus the machine and thread. Plus if you don't necessarily like or know how to sew it can be a tedious and frustrating process.

On the other side if you are just trying to justify a sewing machine purchase because you really want to sew then go for it.

I would ask if someone has a machine you can borrow and then practice on some red tag clearance fabric from Joannes.

It would be cheaper for you just to buy bamboo flats and fold them for stuffing.
