We empty ours in the front or back yards into the bushes or flowerbeds we have mulch in them anyway, solves the dust problem. But we also empty our dust pans and shake our rugs outside too. No sense paying the trash men to take our dust and dirt away when it was tracked in from outside anyway.

Now if we were in an apartment, that wouldn't work out so much.

Re: Help! Our vacuum is dead :(

I've had my dyson for 6 years and I still love it! We have two dogs, so we deal with pet hair as well. I have had to replace the hose but it was super cheap on ebay and really easy to do myself. I've had no problems with the motor. I think it will be working for at least a few more years. If I end up getting 10 years out of it, I'll be happy!

I have had my dyson for 8 years. I recently cleaned it for the first time since I have owned it. It works just as good as the day I bought it. It's just the regular yellow one.

A used Rainbow is the way to go. The best vacuum you can buy and they hold their value so incredibly well.

Another vote for dyson. We got ours at Costco at least 5 years ago, and we haven't had a trouble with it!

I have a dyson and I'm the third owner of it. My grandfather bought it new and had it about 3 years, my parents got it when he passed three years ago to replace their ailing 20 year old central vac, and now I have it. So far very impressed.

Re: Help! Our vacuum is dead :(

When DH and I got married (11 years ago!) I would have to buy a new vacuum every year, because I couldn't justify getting a good one, so I'd get whatever was cheapest at WalMart. I bought a Dyson 6 years ago as a Mother's Day gift from DH because he was tired of me complaining about my vacuum, and it's been running strong ever since! I paid $300 for mine, so it has saved us money. I do like it, it does need to be cleaned out occasionally, and I don't like dealing with the belt when I'm trying to clean out the brush, but since it's saved me about $300 so far, I'm going to keep using it until it dies. It's definitely worth it for me!

I've had my Dyson for 3 years. It still runs like it did on the day I bought it. My parents who have 3 cats and 1 dog have had their Dyson for over 5 years and it still runs great...so another vote for a Dyson here!

Re: Help! Our vacuum is dead :(

Well jeez, you guys aren't helping me much here with all these dyson votes... I would just love a vacuum that actually runs longer than a couple years. We do use it at least once a day and between the cats and the kids it gets worked, but I'm not even buying the cheapest thing out there, kwim?

So frustrating. I'm tempted to check craigslist though my worry there is that if it falls apart two days later or whatever there's nothing we can do...
